After staging "To Be The Best" showcase in 1992, LET Management were responsible for ensuring that the winners of the contest, Cleopatra, had a lucrative career in the music business.
Although the girls had won the contest, preparations began to ensure the group was ready to be presented to the record companies to obtain a contract. Since the girls were so young, being just 8,10 and 12 years old respectively, education was paramount so they attended vocal tuition and choreography sessions after school. They were also introduced to songwriters and a production team to create demos to distribute.
We arranged various personal appearances for the group and the reaction was phenomenal. Concentrating on writing, the group spent hours in the studio, and with an album full of tracks the group was ready to be presented. Following meetings upon meetings with record companies and publishers, we decided to accept offers from WEA Records and EMI Publishing and Cleopatra were launched to the world.
Cleopatra released their debut album "Comin Atcha" and their debut single "Cleopatra's Theme" went straight into the charts at number 3, swiftly followed by their second single "Life Aint Easy" a cover version of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" and their fourth single "Touch of Love" was the final single of the album to be released.
The group performed "Cleopatra's Theme" at Nickelodeon's Annual Kids Choice Awards, which is where they were introduced to Madonna, who later signed the group to her label, Maverick Records in the US. Whilst in the US the girls also filmed a live 60-minute Disney Channel special called "Cleopatra in Concert" which also featured a behind the scenes look into the lives of the girls over a 4-day cruise in the Bahamas.
CITV approached the girls and suggested a TV series "Comin Atcha", with a second season "In the House" which was a show about the girls lives on tour and at home with the family. The series also featured the girls mum, Christine and younger sister, Terri along with special guests Sol Campbell, Ian Wright and Shane Ritchie, to name just a few.
As their career progressed, the girls supported Louise on tour and were also invited to support the Spice Girls on their Spiceworld tour, playing at Wembley stadium. They were privileged to be invited to perform at the Vatican Christmas Carol concert at the request of Pope John Paul II. They went on to feature on the song "Thank ABBA for the Music" along with Steps. B*Witched, Billie and Tina Cousins, which was performed at the Brit Awards where the girls received a nomination for "Best British Newcomer"
After recording a cover version of Maxine Nightingale's hit "Right Back Where We Started From" for the movie "An Extremely Goofy Movie" they went on to record their second album "Stepping Out" which saw a transition for the girls into the young ladies they had become. The album included producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Dallas Austin, Stargate, Darryl Simmons and Cutfather & Joe. The album cover was created by Markus Klinko who had worked on Mariah Carey and Beyonce's album covers. The album included more R&B music than pop music like on their debut album.Cleopatra toured the U.S. promoting their lead single, "U Got It." They promoted the single on "The Queen Latifah Show" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."
Cleopatra became the new spokeswomen for Covergirl cosmetics, making them the first black British group to have been featured in their own Covergirl advertisement. They sang and were featured in the Covergirl campaign promoting their "Triple Lipstick" line.
Cleopatra also toured the U.S. with musicians Brian McKnight, Next, Nelly, and Jessica Simpson. They later toured in Japan and promoted their Japanese-released single, "Yes, The Party's Going Right" produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. They were even invited to perform a mini-concert for the Sultan of Brunei and his royal family.
